In the Park

In the park a dog and master,
From a distance the other day,
Then I saw it was my pastor
Teaching his dog to sit and stay.

And so it was I watched a while
From a distance and out of sight,
And you know it was I had to smile
The dog was giving a damn good fight.

Yep, the poor old pastor now was pleading,
Beseeching that dog to behave,
But I tell you it wasn't heeding,
And I wondered if it could be saved.

Until the Lord himself I swear
The pastor angrily began to speak,
And though a miracle I'd like to share,
The dog just sniffed and took a leak.

Football Metaphors

Like a football kicked around
I listened to all points of view;
Some were crazy and some were sound,
But a touchdown no one threw.

So back to the playbook we went,
Offence, defence X's and O's,
Until no one knew what was meant
And in the huddle we came to blows.

A flag was thrown and timeout called
And we regrouped on the sidelines;
With one play left and our offence stalled,
We as a group had lost our minds.

But still there was the slimmest chance
To snatch a victory from defeat;
This football metaphor at a glance,
Man, the Hail Mary play's pretty sweet.

And so in life we kick around
All these footballs meant to cope,
Until it is our ups and downs,
Leave us lastly with only hope.

A Picker With the luck to Lose

Oh great spirit of the cotton field,
I felt the rhythm of your blues,
And 'twas in your church where I kneeled,
A picker with the luck to lose.

Down in the Delta my old home,
On up to Memphis Tennessee,
That spirit never left me alone,
A picker I would always be.

Tote that barge lift that bale
With three chords on my six string,
That spirit rode me without fail,
But for my supper I could always sing.

A picker with the luck to lose
Where at the crossroad meant to roam;
Me and the spirit of the blues,
Where picking's all I've ever known.

WELCOME TO MY BLOG

 For the latest 'Poem du Jour' please click on the month to the right.

  Simple Thoughts

Simple thoughts on my morning walk,
The woods around they seem all right;
A woodpecker I hear it knock
Amongst the trees and out of sight.
A squirrel above jumps limb to limb,
A startled robin, it takes wing;
And me I walk at idle trim,
Without a thought - not a thing.
And so it is I make my way,
Upon this path without a care;
Where all my thoughts are held at bay,
Till nothing more have I to share.
Simple thoughts on my morning walk,
In the moment amongst the trees;
Now should it come as such a shock,
These simple words are my reprise?

HOPE YOU ENJOY ALL, IF NOT SOME!
